If you’re a die-hard fan for quality Italian cuisine, chances are you might’ve heard of Italian Osteria X. With a cozy little restaurant located a short 5-minute walk from Lavender MRT, this humble spot is a must-try for foodies and pasta-lovers alike!
One of the first things you notice when walking in is the inviting smell of cooking! Notes of cheese and ham fill the warm, comfortably homely interior. Due to its size, seating is limited and there are no reservations, operating via walk-ins only. Their menu covers a few different courses, from Antipasti (appetizers), Primi (first course), and Secondi (proteins, and main courses), with a simple selection of 3-4 options each. Intrigued and enamoured by the sweet scent of warm pasta in the air, we got one from each course, and this is what we found!
Cheese Board –
Cheese lover or not, this cheese board will make a believer out of you! With a heaping serving of 2 different types of cheese and ham, this cheese board is served with soft Foccacia bread and a light dip of balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
The ham starts off strong and heavily savoury, which balances well with the bread and olive oil dip. The cheese in comparison is subtle in flavour, adding a nice balance of taste and texture to every bite.
Spaghetti and Beef Meatballs –
Shortly afterwards, our primi of Spaghetti and Beef Meatballs was served. The food takes a while to be served, but it’s understandable as this quiet restaurant is entirely a one-man operation! Personally, I’m not a huge fan of tomato-sauce spaghettis, which makes this dish all the more surprising.
The tomato flavor isn’t overly strong, and adds some nice texture to the dish with a pleasantly mild tomato fragrance. Shredded cheese and olive oil lightly coats the noodles, making every bite flavorful, yet light enough to keep you going back for more. The beef meatballs are particularly large and chunky, and taste noticeably homemade. Perhaps as a result of this, the beef flavor is stronger than other commonly found meatballs, giving this a heartwarming, handmade feel to the dish.
Pork Sausage and Potatoes –
Our third and final dish was the the Pork Sausage and Potatoes! For something so deceptively simple looking, it made for a hearty and satisfying affair. The potato chunks were warm and soft, with strong potato flavor. As for the pork sausages, they were fairly standard, yet the combination resulted in a fulfilling, heartwarming dish.
Overall, Italian Osteria X is a must-try! The ambience is quiet and intimate, which works together perfectly with the warm, freshly-made dishes. It’s a great place for a romantic dinner, a small family dinner, or even just to enjoy some good food on your own.
